Rob's Picks:
Skinbreaker #1 is a bold and breathtaking fantasy debut from Robert Kirkman and David Finch, presenting a primordial world where survival is brutal and strength defines leadership. Enor, wielder of the mystical blade Skinbreaker, prepares to pass it on to his son Anok, but only a deadly trial will decide who is worthy. Kirkman’s worldbuilding is sharp and efficient, with dialogue that naturally reveals culture, community, and conflict, while Finch’s lush art immerses readers in a landscape of alien rituals and monstrous creatures. The creators keep the strangeness front and center, humanizing the characters just enough to draw us in before revealing their shocking customs, resulting in a gorgeous and original fantasy that fans of Monstress or The Sacrificers should not miss.
Twilight Zone #1 brings Rod Serling’s legendary anthology back to life in comics, opening with “Blanks,” a chilling tale from Dan Watters and Morgan Beem. Following billionaire Edward Kane’s desperate quest to cheat cancer, age, and death, the story delivers all the hallmarks of classic Twilight Zone: sharp social commentary, eerie visuals, moral dilemmas, and a devastating twist. Presented in black and white with narration that feels authentically Serling, the series immediately captures the mood of the original show while giving horror-heavy anthologies a fresh and cerebral alternative.
Ultimate Hawkeye #1 is a sharp, action-packed solo spotlight for Charli Ramsay, cementing her place as one of the Ultimate universe’s most compelling new heroes. Writers B. Earl and Deniz Camp chart her evolution from eco-terrorist firebrand to calculating insurgent, beginning with a violent takedown of arms dealer Ulysses Klaue before pushing her into the decadent and deadly Circles, a secret club of the elite. Forced through psychological and physical trials that culminate in a brutal showdown with Ronin, Charli proves her resilience while adding depth to her character. Smartly written and thrillingly paced, this one-shot is another triumph for Camp and a must-read for fans of the Ultimate line.
Solo's Picks:
Ultimate Hawkeye #1 was a standout one-shot that gave fans of the Ultimate universe a deeper look at Charli. Opening with a mission against Ulysses Klaue before shifting into a masquerade ball that turns into a Saw-like deathtrap, the issue tested the character’s physical and mental resilience on every page. The highlight came in the showdown with this universe’s Ronin, which served as a thrilling crescendo. While not essential to the broader Ultimate storyline, this was an incredibly enjoyable and well-executed issue that’s worth picking up.
Battleworld #1 proved that Marvel still has fresh ideas for the multiversal brawl, even after four previous versions of the event. The book opens strong with Ant-Man discovering a warped new reality before a mysterious voice sets the stage: fight or be erased. The dialogue felt era-appropriate for each character, with Luke Cage delivering some of the funnier lines, while the art team nailed both classic designs and explosive action. It was a surprisingly unique and highly entertaining start that delivered exactly what fans want from a Battleworld story.
All-New Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #2 returned with intensity, picking up on the killer hunting Cindy Moon and delivering a brutal opening attack that left her hospitalized. The emotional core of the issue came in a heated argument between Gwen, Fabian, and Captain Stacy over her continuing to fight while such a dangerous threat lurks. The tension throughout was palpable, and by the time Gwen finally confronted the alleged killer, the stakes felt personal and uncertain. This new run has all the makings of one of Ghost-Spider’s best, making it a must-read for fans.
