Rob's Picks:
Uncanny X-Men #1
The relaunch of the X-Men is gathering serious momentum with the return of Uncanny X-Men. Leaving the adjectiveless X-Men in Alaska, Uncanny takes us way down south to catch up with a trio of fan-favorite mutants. Of the books released so far, this one has the most compelling core team in Rogue, Gambit, and Wolverine. Writer Gail Simone uses this trio’s unique charm to full effect, taking plenty of time to let their personalities shine while they grapple with their lost sense of purpose—and a dragon. The story plays with elements of epic fantasy, including a cryptic prophecy, but the usual enemies of mutant-kind are still hard at work even after the fall of Krakoa. We see how more of the old crew have chosen to move on, some walking away from the fight entirely while others find their purpose in other ways. Artist David Marquez handles an epic battle atop a pyramid just as well as an intimate 1-on-1 dialogue.
Arkham Horror #1
Cullen Bunn (Harrow County, The Sixth Gun) takes a stab at the Cthulhu mythos in this supernatural mystery. The story begins like many detective tales: a woman walks into a PI’s office. Socialite Izzie Barnes has gone missing, and her sister Jenny wants to put detective Joe Diamond on the case. He’s heard a lot of stories in his time, and Jenny’s tale of cults and human sacrifice among the well-to-do is almost too much to believe. But no matter what he believes, a girl is missing, and someone knows something about it. Jenny and Joe set off, shaking down witnesses and grasping for answers in abandoned mansions and old crypts. Andrea Mutti (A Legacy of Violence) has the perfect touch for this blend of pulpy detective noir and cosmic horror. This book is big on atmosphere and will appeal to any horror reader.
Scarlett #3
Kelly Thompson’s contribution to the Energon Universe started great and keeps getting better with each issue. This installment features some of the best action yet, as Scarlett takes on a dangerous mission to prove herself to Clan Arashikage. The issue plays out as a single extended action montage of tense cat-and-mouse evasion, chases, sword fights, gunfights, and even swimming with sharks. Throw in a few explosions and the odd decapitation, and this book is about as perfect as an action comic can be. Storm Shadow and Jinx are on the scene as well, doing plenty of ass-kicking. Scarlett is still unsure of her old partner’s true allegiance, and there’s still the question of just what “secret weapon” the Arashikage clan is after. The cliffhanger in this issue sets us up for a big cameo in #4 that could pull more threads of this extended universe together.
Solomon's Picks:
Red Before Black #1
From the minds of Stephanie Phillips, Goran Sudžuka, and Ive Svorcina comes Red Before Black, a fantastic and captivating new story! We follow former soldier-turned-convict Valeria, who is reentering society after eight long years. Unfortunately, not many opportunities are present for someone like Val, and before long she finds herself caught up in a drug bust led by the FBI. Forced to go undercover, Val must prove her loyalty to the traffickers by killing Leonora, a rebellious punk-rock type who’s gotten herself into more trouble than she can handle. Even in this first issue, the dynamic between the two is compelling, with a clear chemistry suggesting they’d work better as allies than enemies. Val’s PTSD symptoms are evident, especially when violence is involved, and her deep resentment toward the idea of killing again is subtly explored. The tone and pacing in this book are excellent and deeply immersive. A quick but satisfying read, I highly recommend picking up this title!
Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood #1
Black Suit & Blood is FANTASTIC! Whatever expectations you had for this book, throw them out the window and prepare for a story that adds heart to the period when Peter donned the symbiote. The standout story, “Losing Face,” by J.M. DeMatteis and Elena Casagrande, is the real selling point here, offering a storyline that humanizes one of New York’s petty crooks while also showcasing the good Pete did while wearing the infamous suit. The story begins by revealing its ending and then skillfully guides you through a powerful narrative that may just bring you to tears. The art throughout this book is wonderful, and you definitely won’t be disappointed! Do yourself a favor and pick this up today!
Uncanny X-Men #1
An EXTREMELY strong and promising start to the new Uncanny run! Gail Simone, David Marquez, and Matthew Wilson have crafted a fantastic first issue that excels in every aspect. The story grabs you immediately, thanks in large part to the excellent cast and how well they’re handled. Wolverine, Rogue, and Gambit are the trio we follow for most of this issue, and their chemistry is, of course, unmatched. The issue kicks off with an epic battle against a dragon, which leaves the team with an ominous message—an omen of the end. The rest of the issue focuses on the team, especially Rogue, who is torn up over the tragic death of a young mutant. Marquez and Wilson deliver some absolutely gorgeous panels, perfectly complementing Simone’s solid writing. You’ll definitely walk away satisfied with this one. If you haven’t already grabbed this book, do it now!
